DIY costume challenge

Every year, people pay way too much money for a cheap costume that falls apart. It's usually because we don't want to or don't know how to make our own. I am very guilty of this too.

This year I challenge you all to make your costume/throw one together with what you already have. Those are usually the best costumes any way! This forces you to be creative and to think outside the box, plus I am saving you money. Aren't I sweet :)

I want to reveal what me and Josh are doing so bad but I just have to save it for a surprise. It's good though, I promise you that.

I want to almost make this a competition, that if you email your costume or I see it somehow, that I'll crown the best costumes... We'll see what you guys come up with :)

HAPPY HALLOWEENER!!!

Just to inspire...

it's too good.

Jake and Karissa Yeager everybody. I mean they should be everyone's inspiration and competition.

olsen obsession - 18 years strong.

Ashley and MK Olsen.
Beautiful and so unique.

So then, naturally, I'd fall in love with Elizabeth Olsen.

Ashley and MK named their line, Elizabeth and James after their younger brother and sister and I am seeing why. Their younger sister is clearly stunning, has amazing taste, and is apparently a great actress too. Adding to the Olsen obsession, Elizabeth Olsen.

pinning your interest.

pinterest has been my obsession for the past couple months and easily responsible for at least half of the organization in my house, all the new recipes I have tried, and a massive amount of crafts I've made. Needless to say, if you aren't on pinterest and you are just now hearing this for the first time, you have been throughly missing out on life.

Why didn't i think of a virtual cork board?

So this the general "fashion" area where you can search from clothes to photography, weddings, cooking, down to travel. All pinned from different websites and blogs. You can even add your own original pin, they've gotta start somewhere! You'll be obsessed, trust me.

It's a great place for ideas for hair and make up too! Follow me, I'll show you the way :)

Diane Kruger

Keira Knightley

Elie Saab has easily become one of my favorite red carpet designers. I don't feel like I even need to explain why. Point A&B pretty much sum it up.
Ps... Keira's hair too? Adore.

fall 2011 hair trend forecast

Some quick tips on my favorite hair trends for fall 2011...

Hair Color

Red!
Red is the most popular color this fall. Red has many famous blondes and brunettes alike going firey this fall, including yours truly( not that I'm famous haha). Just to name a few; Drew Berrymore, Blake Lively, Whitney Port, and Mandy Moore. If it's your first time going to the bright side, make sure to consult with your stylist and take into consideration your skin tone and the level of maintenance of that color. Everyone can pull off red if it is the right level (1 being black and 10 being platinum) and the right shade (warm = orange/red red or cool = purple undertones).

Whitney Port, very coppery golden red

Mandy Moore, copper red brown

Blake Lively, golden orange red

Golden Blonde.
As it gets cooler, a lot of clients will want to add low lights in, and for some people that is a great idea. The alternative to that is that you can change the shade/tone of your blonde as well. You can do that with adding low lights or simply changing your toner. It adds depth and is a slight change that most blondes can handle without loosing their blonde (blondes tend to be afraid of change- I say this out of love, but it's true.)

Love this color.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, still with platinum in there, but very golen low lights.

Golden Brown.
Adding very subtle highlights that are only a shade or two lighter than your over all color will add depth and create warmth, brightening up your face. (Also see Olivia Palermo under 'bob')

Odette Yustman, very subtle highlights throughout the bottom of her hair, subtle ombre'

Hair Cuts

Long Layers
Kardashian Style. Khloe Kardashian's cut has been the most requested style that I have gotten this fall for long hair. It has a lot of layers on the bottom of her hair, creating height easily, but also leaving a lot of movement at the bottom of your hair, all while still keeping the fullness of your hair.

Khloe Kardashian

The Bob
Most people hear Bob and are immediately turned off to it because you picture "soccer mom bob"... Not the case these days. My favorite one this season so far is Olivia Palermo.

Olivia Palermo, love the cut love the color.

Bangs
Fringe-y, heavy, paint brush, or side swept, you name it, bangs are always in for fall. They are so much easier to maintain during the fall, for me mainly, because your face isn't sweating as much as it was durning summer and your skin isn't as oily, so you are able to keep them clean longer. You can always use a dry shampoo in them either way though. They look great with beanies and can be done with any face shape.

Odette Yustman

Heidi Klum

Hair Styles

The Messy Bun.
Still going strong, the messy bun was still huge on the runways this fall. Keep it precisely that though, messy.

Glitter it up.
Add some sparkle. Add a broach as a hair pin or pick up a sparkley clip and throw that into your messy bun.

The Side Part.
It's back! After a lot of the straight down the middle parts the last few seasons, a strong side part is back. Mainly used in lots of up do's and with tons of volume!

Emma Stone

Megan Fox

The Sleek High Pony
Always in style, and Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Alexander Wang just made it a point to remind us of that. Perfect for every day or for going out.

Bar Refaeli

Sorry it was a long one, I even broke it up by make up and hair. Fall 2011 make up edition coming soon :)

Mossimo Supply Co Khadeja Suede Ankle Bootie

I have already worn them 3 times and I bought them last week. Perfect with cuffed boyfriend jeans or an end of summer dress. I wore them with ankle length skinnies and a big sweater one day too, adorable.

Literally the best $19 I have spent in a while. Thank you again Target.

taking inventory [part uno]

My lovely and very well organized friend Kim, had me "take inventory" for her last year. She's obviously a genius. Brilliant! I basically took the pieces that Kim was having a hard time making an outfit out of and put together a couple of outfits using her wardrobe. It was so fun, because you are basically shopping in your closet. Sometimes you can't keep making outfits with clothes you've had for years and so it's helpful to have a new/different outlook on your own clothes. With my sense of style being different and having never looked at all her clothes like that it was easy to mix and match in new ways! We took pictures and she had at least, I think, like 20 new outfits that I'd made for her. This was like the funnest thing in the world to me, I loved it.

So this year when I was cleaning out my closet, organizing, and sorting through stuff, I decided to take inventory for me :) Guys, you have to try it. It will amaze you how many new combos you can make. Plus, it makes it so much easier to get ready in the morning when you already have a couple of outfit ideas in the back of your head (or saved on your phone!).

So here is my favorite organizing update that I did.

Attack of the shoes!! $20 at Target for the racks! Look how many those puppies can hold. Now I can see all of my shoes, it's way more organized, and I will get more wear out of them :) win win win! One might say, "Winning!"

Pictures of my "inventory" to follow!!

memories on paper

Over the years, I have been semi-hoarding all the cards, notes, and letters that I have gotten from friends and family. There are too many funny, loving, caring, sweet, full of life memories that I can't just toss. It also seemed just as pointless to let them sit in a box in a cabinet where I never get to see them either. Lucky me, I stumbled upon a blog that showed her great idea for saving your cards! The way that she made hers was using a whole punch and keeping them in a small binder. It was really cute, but I wanted to personalize it for me.

I have an addiction to journals. I can't help it. They are beautiful and I love to write. So needless to say, I can't finish one journal before I fall in love with another one. This actually happened to be perfect though! I had this amazing journal I had bought at Anthropologie and had been dying to do something really cool with. Seemed like with all my cards and this gem, I finally had that opportunity.

It's gorgeous, right?

Pick your favorite memories! Cards, notes, letters, whatever! I used ModPodge to glue the cards to the paper.
( The second picture is Instagram'd- if you aren't addicted, you should be. )

This was my first page but you can decide to put whatever really.

just because's :)

Christmas cards

I love the way this came out! It is just so fun to flip through and see all the sweet words of encouragement, love, and joy that people wish you on graduations, birthdays, and for no reason at all. I am so blessed to be so loved by amazing people and their words are something I cherish so deeply and now they look adorable in my journal. Hope you guys can do something fun and special to you with your memories!!!

I have been so glaze-y.

Call me shinyhair girl.
NOT because it's oily either, yew.

I am struggling to fully commit to my next hair color for fall (red? keep my brunette ombre? ugh, decisions.). So, while I am not currently dying my hair (it's been 6 weeks!) I have found my go to. I guess it's really just an old friend! Did mine yesterday in between loads of laundry and I feel like a new woman.

I love Cellophane by Sebastian or PM Shines by Paul Mitchell. Both of the glazes (or gloss) are demi-permanent hair color, which is between semi and permanent. The lines are both deposit only, so it won't make you blonde if you are brunette, it simply just adds a tone or shine to your color you already have or will darken your color. Both of the lines have clear, reds, brunettes (golden-auburn-ashy), and golden blondes. Stick to your tone your stylist already gave you and just use these to up your shine or add vibrancy, not to change your overall color!

The Cellophane is an easy at home home product because it doesn't require processing liquid and only takes 20 minutes. The shine and feel that the product gives your hair is that just dyed shine and it actually makes it feel healthier too. The results last for about 4-6 weeks, depending on how much you wash.

PM Shines is available only by professionals only.
Cellophane is available at local beauty supply stores or by a professional.

glamour girl curl

"That glamour girl curl is so hot right now."
Hot Tools recently came out with a ceramic curling wand in a couple different sizes, I went with the 1 1/4". I prefer my curls to be bigger and a little bit looser, but if you prefer them to be a bit tighter, than go for the smaller wand.  It curls so fast and is so easy to use. It gives you the very glamorous and retro curls that we all love and are so in this fall.

It's so easy to create the glamorous waves that stars are wearing a lot right now.
Here's how:
1. Section off your hair in 1 1/4" wide sections,  pulling majority of it up into a clip.
2. Wrap your hair around the wand in about 1" increments.
3. Repeat with every section doing your whole head.
*When you get close to your face you might want to do sections smaller so that the curl holds higher up on the hair shaft, keeping it's shape.
4. Spray hair with a lighter-medium hold hair spray and let it "set" or cool down for about 5 minutes.
5. Run your fingers or a brush through your hair and maybe one more spray of hairspray and TADA!

Jessica Alba

Annalynne McCord

Sienna Miller- this is the similar to the way mine came out yesterday

and of course, Taylor Swift, the queen bee of bringing glamour back to the curl world.

Coming Soon!!!
I am going to do a video soon of how to curl with a straightener too for those messy beach curls that I LIVE in...

getting your hair healthy

Healthy hair is always in style and as a stylist, I get questions all the time about how to get or keep your skin and hair healthy. Here are some great tricks to get your hair healthy& shiny, and your skin glowing!

Now for those of you who have let your hair get damaged through the summer from chlorine, sun, color, or heat styling tools, then you need something to fix it now. Here are some great products you can use to start fixing what is already "broken"...

it's a 10 spray leave in conditioner and mask everyone can use!!

Brazilian Blowout shampoo, conditioner, serum, and masque are all amazing smoothing products. Dry and curly hair especially love these products, but anyone with color or heat damage can use them in moderation. I recommend alternating the shampoo and conditioner with another lighter product.

Joico's Kpak product is great for people with highly damaged hair that are in need of protein being put back into their hair ASAP.

I love Moroccan Oil! They have done a great job of making different levels of serum for each hair type, making this such an easy product to buy.

Paul Mitchell Strength is a great product for blondes or highlights because it adds in the protein taken out from bleaching, letting it fill the holes in your hair.

I love Pureology, it's what I have been personally using for about a year and I am coming up on the time to change it. I love the hydrate and reconstructive line. They are both organic and everyone's hair just loves Pureology.

Whether or not your hair is healthy already, you always need to do at least two things other than a good shampoo and conditioner; a leave in conditioner and a weekly mask/deep conditioner. Everyone's hair can benefit from both of these.

Remember when you are buying your products not to just look at price. In a lot of products, you are going to get what you pay for, but not everything is expensive. If you are going to pay good money for a cut or color, make sure you follow up on your part by taking good care of what your stylist did.

DRINK LOTS OF WATER! Your hair is made up mostly of water so you need to drink lots! Your skin will get such a great glow from drinking enough water too.

Fitness.com has a great list of different foods that are high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids that boost your hair and skin's health from the inside out.
http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipes/healthy-eating/superfoods/top-10-superfoods-for-skin-and-hair/

Get a Brazilian Blowout. Make sure it is the actual Brazilian Blowout the brand not just a style of 'Blowouts', I have seen nightmares that cause more damage than good. The brand has had lots of negative press, but I encourage you to do your homework and you will see it's perfectly safe, and a miracle of a product. The product fills in the holes in your hair and smoothest the hair shaft leaving you with smooth, frizz free, healthy hair. I would only not recommend this product to those with really fine hair because it will take what little volume you have, but if you need it, just have your stylist do the tips of your hair.

Next time you are out in the sun, try to wear a spray hair sunscreen- Kpak makes a great one that I swear by, so does Goldwell. For those of your who wear your hair in a part out in the sun like me, they now make a great alcohol free spf 30 for your scalp to avoid painful burns also! Or you can just simplify things and wear a hat or scarf. If you are going to go in the water- pool or ocean, you need to do one of two things; get your hair wet with regular water or put a deep conditioner on your hair. The idea behind this is to have your hair soak up either the water or conditioner instead of chlorine or salt water.

Lay off the heat. Your hair needs at least two days off a week. Give it a break, let it air dry and go natural- that's usually my favorite anyway :)

Covered a lot of basics today, but if you have more questions, let me know!!
